ABOUT US
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial
art which translated means "art of the hand and foot." It is a
discipline that trains people mentally and physically.
What is the ATA?
The ATA is the American Taekwondo Association. It is the largest
national association in the world. Outside of America, ATA's Songahm
style forms are taught through the Songahm Taekwondo Federation (STF).
An ATA member in good standing may train at any ATA or STF school in
the world. For more information about the ATA, please visit their
website at www.ataonline.com.
The
Values & Philosophy of the ATA
(as quoted from the New Student
Orientation Handbook)
Each person who becomes
involved in the Martial Arts has a different objective: to improve his
physical condition, to learn self-defense, or perhaps to improve
self-discipline - to meet a mental as well as physical challenge.
Each of these different goals, however, reflect one
common thought: personal improvement. because each student has
different capabilities (mentally and physically), ATA instructors
concentrate on individual progress. There are certain techniques and
mental concepts that must be mastered as the student proceeds through
the ranks - and some progress more quickly than others. But students
are not compared to one another; each is judged by ATA standards
according to a concept we call "personal victory"... a measurement of
individual improvement based on personal victory.
Because of the "personal victory" concept, the ATA
program is an exciting form of mental and physical exercise for men and
women, boys and girls, the young in age and the young at heart. The
current physical condition of the student is not an issue because
improvement is the common goal. If the student is willing to attend
classes two or three times per week, he will meet his goal, and he will
receive additional benefits he never expected.
As students attend classes regularly, they prepare
for periodic testings to achieve progressively higher rank, signified
by the color of the belt worn with their uniform. Upon successfully
testing through the nine ranks of the colored belt series, the student
is awarded his First Degree Black Belt (usually within two years for
adults).
The beginning student often considers the Black
Belt to be the ultimate goal; but successful martial artists realize
that their training actually began when they received their Black Belt.
The study during the colored-belt teaches the student the basic
techniques needed for training. The Black Belt is the beginning of a
wonderful journey; it is not the destination.
Please take the opportunity, also, to meet with
your instructor, he is committed to your success and will be pleased to
answer additional questions and to help you achieve your goals.
Advanced abilities and techniques are a result of
continuous training after reaching the first Black Belt level. because
the ATA emphasizes personal improvement, the many benefits of Taekwondo
multiply as the student continues to build on his ability.
